A side-chain mercapto group-containing vinyl alcohol polymer comprising vinyl alcohol units and structural units represented by the following formula (I): where R1 is a hydrogen atom or a carboxyl group, R2 is a hydrogen atom, a methyl group, a carboxyl group, or a carboxymethyl group, and X is a bivalent group that contains a carbon atom and a hydrogen atom and that may contain a nitrogen atom and/or an oxygen atom, the bivalent group containing 1 to 22 carbon atoms, wherein when R1 is a carboxyl group, the carboxyl group may form a ring with a hydroxyl group of an adjacent vinyl alcohol unit, and when R2 is a carboxyl group or a carboxymethyl group, the carboxyl group or the carboxymethyl group may form a ring with a hydroxyl group of an adjacent vinyl alcohol unit.
