[Class 17 (ii).] An inside heel cushion consists of a pad 1 of sponge rubber or the like provided with outwardly and upwardly curved rear and side portions 1<a>, 1<d> designed, in use, to fit against and support the bottom and lower rear and side portions only of the heel. The front 1<e> of the pad is open and tapered to a thin edge. The inner surface 1<b> of the side portions 1<a> may be concavo-connex, as shown, or merely concave, and the rear portion 1<d> may be concavo-convex. The lower surface of the pad may be ribbed or corrugated. The pad may be loose in, cemented in, or built into the heel portion of the shoe, and may be covered with leather or the like, or by the shoe lining. The pad may be integral with, or secured to, a forward extension 2, Fig. 6, which tapers to a thin edge 2d and has a thickened, curved extension 2<a> acting as an arch support at the inner side of the foot. The outer side of the extension tapers to a thin edge. The pad and extension may be formed with holes 4 for purposes of resiliency and ventilation. In addition to, or in lieu of, the extension 2, the heel cushion may be combined with a pad for supporting the metatarsal arch. |
