[Classes 46 and 111] Comminuting apparatus, particularly for sewage, comprises a rotating circular drum having perforations in its cylindrical face and a cutter member mounted adjacent its periphery and cooperating therewith to comminute the solidmaterial collected thereon, and means for guiding a fluid stream diametrically through the drum so that the comminuted material is flushed. or washed from the drum by the fluid stream emerging from the cylindrical surface. In the construction shown, the apparatus comprises a drum 22 driven by an electric motor 29, the drum and motor being mounted on a framework which can be removed bodily from the chamber 10 to which it is normally secured by bolts 19. The drum is mounted on a shaft 23 and comprises end plates joined by bars 32, the latter being braced at intervals by circumferential ribs 33. The bars are formed with grooves 41, 42, for receiving the frame members 35, 36 of screen sections 34, which are secured to the bars by screws 36. The bars also carry the blades 44 which co-operate with a fixed blade 49 for comminuting the material which is too large to pass through the screen. A grate 53 is provided above the drum to prevent the passage of large particles when the liquid attains an unusually high level, and a plate 51 is mounted beneath the drum and close to it to prevent flow of fluid between the drum and the base of the framework. As viewed in Fig. 4, the drum revolves anti-clockwise and thereby carries the material, which is flowing towards the drum from the right, upwards to the blade 49. The fluid after entering the drum passes into a discharge conduit outside the drum and to the left of it as seen in Fig. 4. In a modification, the drum revolves clockwise, the blade 47 being mounted between two plates rotatably mounted one at each end of the shaft 23. A stop plate adjacent the base of the framework normally holds the blade in a fixed position to co-operate with the blades on the drum, but when adjustment of the blade is deemed necessary, access to it is effected by rotating the end plates on which it is mounted. The end plates also carry a plate which, when the blade is against the fixed stop, is positioned adjacent the grid 53 to seal the space between the drum and the grid. |
