PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a switch device which, while suppressing the number of external memories, combines fast access to the memories with burst absorption of user traffic. SOLUTION: A switch device 100 comprises: an internal memory 20 of a fast access speed and a small capacity; and an external memory 80 of a slow access speed and a large capacity. A sorting processor 30 selects, as a buffer for storing packets accepted at an input port 12, the internal memory 20 if the internal memory 20 has an available area of a predetermined threshold or more, but selects the external memory 80 if the internal memory 20 has an available area smaller than the predetermined threshold.
