A process of manufacturing a growing medium from an initial material, wherein said initial material is a by-product of a composting process and comprises a mixture of oversize biodegradable material and contaminants, the process comprises removing contaminant objects from the initial material S11-S14, removing mineral contaminants from the initial material S15, and subsequently defibrating the remaining material S10. The removal steps may use a tommel wash screen S11, S13, S15 to separate by the size of the material, a water vortex system S14 to separate by the specific gravity compared to water and/or an optical identification system S16, S18. Defibrating S10 is carried out by applying pressure or a shear force. Also claimed is the apparatus for the process, the defibrating unit and the resulting growing medium. |
