The invention discloses a distributed subnetwork consisting of multiple LANs 100,102,104,106. Each LAN has associated hosts 110,114,118,122 and routers 112,116,120,124. The routers are interconnected over backbone 108. The invention discloses routers using the Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP) but having two modes of operation. In the first mode, one router is elected master for a virtual router and it transmits virtual routing control packets (VRCP) to multiple LANs. In the second mode, all routers are masters and all transmit VRCP, but only to their local LAN. In the multiple master mode the first router to receive a packet forwards it. In the second mode the frequency of VRCP transmission may be decreased relative to the first mode. |
