One or more kinds of ground cereals with or without other added ingredients are mixed with water and cooked, for example in a steam jacketted cooker, steam at about ten pounds pressure, also being introduced into the cooker above the material to be cooked: the cooked material is then dried, preferably by feeding between a pair of heated drums from which drums it is removed by a scraper. The flaked product may be passed through a sieve. The dried and cooked product has fluid added to it to form a ready-to-eat non-granular mash. In a specific example 52,5 per cent of wheatmeal, 18 per cent of oatmeal, 10 per cent of cornmeal, 15 per cent of wheat germ, ,5 per cent of sodium chloride, 1 per cent alfalfa, 1 per cent of dried brewers' yeast and 2 per cent of edible bone meal are mixed together and treated as above.
