An axial flow centrifugal pump 1 with a body, an inlet 2, an outlet 4 and a rotary drive. An impeller 6 is provided with alternating sets of first curved vanes 7 to generate a pumping action and second vanes 8 to contribute towards straightening of spiral flow of the fluid being pumped, minimising / reducing eddy formation and propagation. The stator 9 has oppositely curved vanes 10 to those of the first vanes on the impeller, so that both the pressure in the fluid is increased and the spiralling of the fluid is largely eliminated. A further straightening member 12 is provided downstream of the stator. The combination of impeller and stator act to increase the pressure (head) generated by the pump and the combination of stator and straightening member act to suppress the spiralling motion of the fluid and eddies therein in the pump body and outlet pipe caused by the action of the impeller. In an alternative arrangement, the stator may also have first and second sets of curved vanes. |
