摘要 Described herein are systems and methods of identifying bipolar disorder in a person. One such method includes acquiring 31P spectroscopic imaging data from a region of interest in a brain of the person and subsequently analyzing the 31P spectroscopic imaging data to obtain a signal intensity and a concentration for one or more phosphorus metabolites. A reduced concentration the one or more phosphorus metabolites, such as inorganic phosphate, in the brain can indicate bipolar disorder in the person. Frontal lobe inorganic phosphate concentration in medication-free adolescents can indicate bipolar depression.

A method for identifying bipolar disorder in a person who is 13 to 19 years old, comprising: acquiring 31P spectroscopic data from a region of interest in a brain of the person; by a processor, analyzing the data to obtain an indicator of each of a signal intensity and a concentration of inorganic phosphate (Pi); and determining, based on the indicators, at least one of a likely diagnosis of bipolar disorder or a probability of bipolar disorder in the person, the determining comprising comparing the indicated concentration of inorganic phosphate (Pi) to a threshold concentration of inorganic phosphate (Pi) obtained from 31P spectroscopic data acquired from persons not having bipolar disorder; and outputting, by a processor, an indicator of the at least one of the likely diagnosis or the probability.
