A method of producing nanophosphor, consisting essentially of: dissolving a phosphor starting material in a solvent, wherein the solvent optionally includes a surface-active agent, and adding a precipitating agent thereto, thereby producing a phosphor precursor; wherein the phosphor starting material consists essentially of a compound represented by ML3 where M is at least one selected from the group consisting of Y, La, Eu, Gd, Tb, Er, Yb and any mixtures thereof and L comprises Cl, Br NO3, OCH3, OC2H5, OC3H7, or OC4H9 or any mixtures thereof; and at least one selected from the group consisting of H3BO3, boron hydride, an organic boron compound, H3PO4, NH4H2PO4, (NH4)2HPO4, NaVO3, NH4VO3 and any mixtures thereof; treating the phosphor precursor with an inorganic salt; heat-treating the phosphor precursor treated with the inorganic salt to produce nanophosphor particles; and removing the inorganic salt by washing.
