The ligand can include a first monomer unit including a first moiety having affinity for a surface of the nanocrystal, a second monomer unit including a second moiety having a high water solubility, and a third monomer unit including a third moiety having a selectively reactive functional group or a selectively binding functional group. The ligand can be a random copolymer. |

a nanocrystal; and an outer layer including a ligand, wherein the ligand includes a polymer including a random copolymer including regions of R1, R2, and R3, wherein:
R1 has a formula -L1-T1, wherein L1 includes alkylene terminated by —CONH—, wherein T1 includes imidazole;R2 has a formula -L2-T2, wherein L2 includes alkylene terminated by —CONH—, wherein T2 includes —[O—CH2—CHR5]n—R6, where R5 is H, n is an integer in the range of 0 to 30, and R6 is C1 to C6 alkoxy;R3 has a formula -L3-T3, wherein L3 includes alkylene terminated by —CONH—, wherein T3 includes —[O—CH2—CHR7]m—R8, where R7 is H, m is an integer in the range of 0 to 30, and R8 is C1 to C6 aminoalkyl. |
