In certain aspects, the present invention provides compositions and methods for increasing red blood cell and/or hemoglobin levels in vertebrates, including rodents and primates, and particularly in humans.

1. A method for treating anemia in a patient, the method comprising administering to a patient in need thereof an effective amount of an ActRIIa polypeptide selected from the group consisting of:
a) a polypeptide comprising an amino acid sequence at least 95% identical to SEQ ID NO: 2; b) a polypeptide comprising an amino acid sequence at least 95% identical to SEQ ID NO: 3; c) a polypeptide comprising an amino acid sequence at least 95% identical to SEQ ID NO: 7; d) a polypeptide comprising an amino acid sequence at least 95% identical to SEQ ID NO: 12; and e) a polypeptide comprising an amino acid sequence that is encoded by a nucleic acid that hybridizes to the complement of SEQ ID NO:5 in the presence of 6.0 sodium/sodium citrate (SSC) at 45° C. followed by a wash in 2.0 SSC at 45° C., andwherein the ActRIIa polypeptide binds to activin.
