The present invention is directed to the synthetic intermediate 2-[2-{4,6-dihydroxy-tetrahydropyran-2-yl]-isoindole-1,3-dione which can be prepared using a 2-deoxyribose-5-phosphate aldolase (DERA) chemoenzymatic process. The invention is also directed to the oxidation of 2-[2-{4,6-dihydroxy-tetrahydro-pyran-2-yl]-isoindole-1,3-dione to the corresponding lactone.
