A method and apparatus for coefficient scan based on a partition mode of a prediction unit are disclosed. The method comprises the steps of: determining a scan method based on a partition mode of a prediction unit; and encoding information about the scan method, wherein the scan method is determined on the basis of rate distortion optimization (RDO) from among candidate scan methods which are extracted in consideration of the shapes of the partitions of the partition mode.
