[Class 44] Permutation locking means for a slidable bolt d comprises a number of transversely slidable key or detent members e pressed upwards by springs, some of the detents engaging notches on the lower side of the bolt whilst others engage notches on the upper side of the bolt when they are depressed. Thus to release the bolt it is necessary to depress only the detents in engagement with the lower side thereof. The detent members are of loop form, Fig. 7, encircling the bolt, the assemblage being housed in a bipartite block c in a casing a having a hinged side portion a<6> normally secured by bolts with heads to be turned by a key. The bolt d is normally retracted by a spring d', being brought into operation by pressure on the head d<3>. A plate g attached to the casing, engages a notch g<1> to limit the movements of the bolt, the locked position being indicated on a plate g<2> visible through an aperture g<3>. The device is shown applied by a strap b,-the nuts b<1> securing which are inside the casing a,-to a steering column x on a motor vehicle but it is also stated to be applicable for locking a gear lever, brake lever or other control member.
