For a gear shift control system to control vehicular gear shift, it is determined whether an ABS is in operation in a traveling vehicle. A vehicle transmission is controlled if the ABS is in operation. It is determined whether the vehicle can be subject to gear shift control to an N gear based on vehicle state information. If it is determined that the gear shift control to the N gear is available, a gear shift control signal is generated and transmitted to a stepped transmission so that vehicle gearshift is controlled at the N gear.
