Embodiments of the present invention relate to a method for analyzing pulse data. In one embodiment, the method comprises receiving a signal containing data representing a plurality of pulses, the signal generated in response to detecting light scattered from blood perfused tissue. Further, one embodiment includes performing a pulse identification or qualification algorithm on at least a portion of the data, the pulse identification or qualification algorithm comprising at least one constant, and modifying the at least one constant based on results obtained from performing the pulse identification or qualification algorithm, wherein the results indicate that a designated number of rejected pulses has been reached.

1. A system for analyzing pulse data, comprising:
a driver configured to drive a light emitter to emit light into a tissue; input circuitry configured to receive a signal representative of light detected after being scattered by the tissue, the signal comprising data representing a plurality of pulses; an ensemble averager; a signal conditioner configured to operate on the signal to produce a conditioned signal, wherein the signal conditioner adjusts in response to a weight of the ensemble averager; a pulse qualifier configured to operate on the conditioned signal to identify qualified pulses of the conditioned signal; and a physiological parameter calculator configured to determine a physiological parameter based on the qualified pulses.
