1. A polymeric microporous membrane comprising a single layer comprising:
(a) a first microporous surface comprising a rough surface having an Ra of at least about 1.7 micrometers; (b) a second microporous surface; and (c) a bulk between the first surface and the second surface; wherein the bulk comprises a first porous portion including the first microporous surface, and a second porous portion including the second microporous surface; and
(i) the first portion comprises a first set of controlled pore structures; and(ii) the second portion comprises a second set of a controlled pore structures, wherein the second set of pore structures has a smaller average pore size than the first set.
