A controller is provided with a variable intake valve mechanism (42), which is capable of changing the timing of the opening and closing of an intake valve (40), or an exhaust valve mechanism (43), which is capable of changing the timing of the opening and closing of an exhaust valve (41), said variable intake valve mechanism or exhaust valve mechanism having an exhaust throttle valve (23), which is capable of adjusting the flow rate of exhaust in an exhaust passage (4), disposed on the exhaust passage (4). The controller is used in an internal combustion engine (1) capable of being provided with an overlap period in which a valve opening period of the intake valve (40) and a valve opening period of the exhaust valve (41) overlap. The controller controls the exhaust throttle valve (23) in such a manner that the valve lift of the exhaust throttle valve (23) in the overlap period is smaller than the valve lift of the exhaust throttle valve (23) when an overlap period is not provided. |
