The present invention concerns a method for treating pollutants contained in exhaust gases circulating in an exhaust line (22) and coming from combustion in at least one cylinder (12) of an internal combustion engine (10), in particular for a motor vehicle, said line comprising at least one selective catalytic reduction catalyst (30) for treating nitrogen oxides (NOx) contained in these gases and at least one means (28) for injecting a reducing agent. According to the invention, the method consists of: forming ammonium nitrate in the catalyst (30), decomposing said ammonium nitrate by introducing external energy for exhaust gas temperatures lower than approximately 200 °C, using a hydrocarbon to increase the sensitivity of the ammonium nitrate in such a way as to obtain the highly exothermic decomposition of this nitrate. |
