PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device for an internal combustion engine that can inhibit occurrence of abnormal combustion at start of the engine even if an electric pump has an abnormality.SOLUTION: An internal combustion engine controlled by a control device includes a hydraulically-driven type timing delay side lock mechanism for switching by supply/discharge of working fluid between a state where a relative rotation phase between a crank shaft and a cam shaft for an intake valve is maintained at a timing delay side phase and a state where the relative rotation phase is released from the maintained state. When an electric pump has an abnormality, the control device allows the relative rotation phase to be maintained by the timing delay side lock mechanism by using the working fluid supplied from a mechanical pump by the time engine operation is stopped (Yes in Step S30) and stops the engine operation with the relative rotation phase maintained at the timing delay side phase.
