A pavement slab (10) including top and bottom surfaces (12, 14), first and second longitudinal side surfaces (16, 18), and first and second transverse side surfaces (20, 22). The slab (10) includes a first and second plurality of transverse holes (24, 26) formed within the first and second longitudinal side surfaces (16, 18), respectively, a first and second plurality of longitudinal holes (30, 32) formed within the first and second plurality of transverse holes (24, 26), respectively, and a plurality of dowel bars (28). Each of the holes (24, 26, 30, 32) is sized and shaped to receive slidably a corresponding one of the plurality of dowel bars (28). Each of the dowel bars (28) is slidable between a retracted position and an extended position in which the dowel bar (28) forms a joint between the slab (10) and another slab (10) or preexisting pavement. |
