[Class 46.] A filter unit is formed by rolling a metal blank into a thin ribbed ribbon while giving it a definite curvature and retaining the edge of lesser curvature at least as thick as the outer edge of the ribbon, the ribbon being then helically wound on a support with its thinner edge adjacent to the support. The edge of the ribbon on the inlet side may be rounded. Fig. 5 shows an element 10 supported on a fluted drum 13, the element being held between a flange 15, formed at the, joint of the drum with a cap 14, and a cup 16, which is attached to the drum. As shown in Fig. 1, a round wire 17 is fed to conical rollers 18, one of which has radial grooves, so that the wire is at the same time formed into a ribbed ribbon and given a definite curvature about an axis perpendicular to its faces. The ribbon is wound helically on a drum 13 which is supported on a rotating shaft 20. A guide roller 21 is provided and the drum is arranged to move axially as the successive turns of the helix are laid in place. The ribbon may pass from the rollers 18 to the roller 21 through a guide tube having the same curvature as the ribbon. |
