METHOD AND SYSTEM HAVING A VIRTUAL STOCK KEEPING UNIT FOR CONFIGURABLE MOBILE PHONE PURCHASES

One disclosed method includes recording a sale to a customer of a configurable mobile device (119) at a retail point-of-sale system (103) and providing the customer with a virtual stock-keeping-unit (101) at the point-of-sale system (103). The virtual stock- keeping-unit (101) represents a customized mobile device (119) that has not yet been assembled. The method further includes granting the customer access to a mobile device configurator (107) based on a configurator access code associated with the virtual stock- keeping-unit (101) and generating, by the mobile device configurator (119), a bill of material (113) in response to configuration input (127) received by the mobile device configurator (107). The configurator (107) then sends the bill of material (113) to a manufacturing system (111) for assembly of the customized mobile device (119) and the customized mobile device (119) is assembled in accordance with the bill of material (113) and information associated with the virtual stock-keeping-unit (101). The customized mobile device (119) is shipped from the place of assembly to the customer.
