Glycol ethers, especially the mono and dialkyl ethers of alkylene and polyalkylene 1,2 glycols, are stabilized by adding a small quantity of a hydroxyalkylamine such as triethanolamine. If aldehydes are present, the ether is preferably first treated by refluxing with acid, neutralizing with alkali, and distilling under reduced pressure. In an example, the monoethyl ether of ethylene glycol is refluxed for 5 hours with a small quantity of sulphuric acid, then a slight excess of alkali is added, and the mixture is fractionated, after which 0,1 per cent of triethanolamine is added to the purified ether. |
