<p>The outdoor heat pump water heater 1 comprises a compressor 2, a water-refrigerant heat exchanger 8, an auxiliary hot water storage tank 25 and a compressor-driving electrical component such as a wide-bandgap semiconductor inverter 23. The inverter is disposed in thermal contact with the auxiliary tank, either directly or through a heat transfer material. Location of an inverter in this way permits heat generated by the inverter to be used to heat water in the tank and also facilitates a reduction in the amount of thermal insulation used to insulate the tank. The heater ideally includes an air-refrigerant heat exchanger 7 located in a blower chamber 15 separated from the compressor and auxiliary tank by a partition 16. Other electrical components may be located with the inverter on a common electronic substrate 24 with the inverter being on an opposite face of the substrate to the other components. A water heating system comprising the outdoor heat pump water heater and a hot water storage tank (34, figure 4) is also claimed. The system may be arranged to supply hot water either directly from the heat pump or from the hot water storage tank to a user.</p> |
