A nitrification reaction, an autotrophic denitrification reaction, a heterotrophic denitrification reaction, and a chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal reaction are simultaneously carried out in the reactor. The ammonium acts as an electron donor and nitrite acts as an electron acceptor, and the ammonium and the nitrite are converted into nitrogen gas and nitrate, in the autotrophic denitrification reaction, which is caused by the autotrophic denitrifying bacteria.
