PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable multicolor printing by the same speed with monochrome printing, even if there is deviation in the ratio of the color material amount used. SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus includes: an edge extraction part 21 which extracts pixels belonging to an edge part and an edge neighborhood part from image forming data which holds information to define the color material use amount for each of a plurality of color materials for each pixel and outputs edge information which shows information about the pixel belonging to the edge part and the edge neighborhood part; a color material use amount computing part 22 which computes total amount of the color material use amount of all color materials for each pixel from image forming data and outputs total amount of the color material use amount; and a color material use amount restriction part 23 which limits the color material use amount for each pixel of the image forming data so that total amount may fit into the maximum value of the color material use amount of a single color material, based on the edge information and total amount of the color material use amount, and outputs the image forming data which is limited in the color material use amount.
