PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fuel injection system in a cylinder direct type internal combustion engine to perform fuel injection for suitable combustion even when accumulating deposits at injection holes of a fuel injection device. SOLUTION: The fuel injection system includes: a fuel injection device with a plurality of fuel injection holes opening in a cylinder of an internal combustion engine having predetermined tapered angle so as to enlarge in diameter to an opening direction: a deposit accumulation detecting means for detecting accumulation of the deposits at the fuel injection holes of the fuel injection device; and an injection retard controlling means for retard controlling the fuel injection timing in the cylinder by the fuel injection device in suction stroke of the internal combustion engine when accumulation of the deposits is detected by the deposit accumulation detecting means. The injection retard controlling means determines the amount of retard of the fuel injection timing by the fuel injection device based on a change in the fuel injection direction by accumulation of the deposits at fuel injection holes and the rotational speed of the internal combustion engine.
