PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively utilize iron-making dust or the like, which is generated in large volumes in an ironworks, at a volume exceeding a conventional use limit value, as an iron source. SOLUTION: In a method of operating a vertical melting furnace, pig iron is produced by using: coke for a blast furnace as fuel; and an agglomerate of iron-making dust together with an iron source having a high metallization ratio, as an iron source. In the method of operating a vertical melting furnace, (x) the agglomerate of iron-making dust has a carbon content of 5-12 mass%, a cold strength of 30 kg/cm<SP POS="POST">2</SP>or higher, and a diameter of 8-30 mm, (y) a usage ratio of the agglomerate of iron-making dust is 5-25% relative to the total iron source, and (z) a solid fuel ratio and/or a blast volume is adjusted, in addition to the usage ratio.
