PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To granulate a melted product of a thermoplastic resin having a specified structure without using a special granulating device. SOLUTION: In a method for producing a thermoplastic resin, a melted product of the thermoplastic resin comprising a repeating unit represented mainly by general formula (1):-A<SP POS="POST">1</SP>-x-A<SP POS="POST">2</SP>-OCO(CH<SB POS="POST">2</SB>)<SB POS="POST">m</SB>COO- or (2):-A<SP POS="POST">1</SP>-x-A<SP POS="POST">2</SP>-COO(CH<SB POS="POST">2</SB>)<SB POS="POST">m</SB>OCO- is cast in water and cooled and solidified to perform granulation. (in the formulea, A<SP POS="POST">1</SP>and A<SP POS="POST">2</SP>each independently denotes a substituent selected from an aromatic group, a condensed aromatic group, an alicyclic group and an alicyclic heterocyclic group; x independently denotes a bivalent substituent selected from the group consisting of a direct bond, -O-, -S-, -CH<SB POS="POST">2</SB>-CH<SB POS="POST">2</SB>-, -C=C-, -C=C(Me)-, -C≡C-, -CO-O-, -CO-NH-, -CH=N-, -CH=N-N=CH-, -N=N- or =N(O)=N-; and m denotes an integer of 2 to 20).
