PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a negative electrode material (particle) for a high-performance non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery, having high discharge capacity and high charge discharge efficiency in an initial stage and during cycling, being excellent in cycle characteristics, and allowing suppression of electrode expansion after cycling. SOLUTION: A negative electrode material for a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery containing a compound, SiZxMy, comprising Si, an element Z and an element M, which satisfies the following conditions (1) to (6): (1) the element Z is at least either one of C and N; (2) the range of x is 0.01≤x≤0.18; (3) the element M is 1 kind or 2 kinds or more of elements selected from the elements other than Si and the element Z; (4) the range of y is 0.01≤y≤0.35; (5) the average particle diameter (D50) is 50 nm or more and 20μm or less; and (6) it has an amorphous structure.
