A high-security lock (1, 1') has an electromagnetic release (12, 12') and a locking tongue. In a process to operate the lock, following operation of the electromagnetic release, the locking bar is stabilised in the 'locked' position. The lock has at least one redundant function, consisting of: magnetic stabilisation of the bar in the locked position; and/or in gravity operated stabilisation of the bar in the locked position; and/or selection of an electro-magnetically bar holding function; and/or engagement of a mechanical lock.
