[Class 74 (ii)] A knitted stocking has the heel, sole and toe portions formed of two varns B, T, one of which has long sinker loops 10 to form a pile, and the leg and instep portions having the same yarns plated to form rib fabric. The pile loops 10 may be arranged to project from the face upon which the needle loops 5 of the same yarn show, or may project from the opposite face. The stocking is knitted upon a double cylinder machine employing double-ended needles 17 and the pile fabric is knitted by the needles operating in the lower cylinder. These needles draw their loops to form plated fabric, during rib knitting, over the usual sinkers 50 and draw the long loops over instruments 53 arranged in tricks in a dial 54 rotating with the upper cylinder. A recess 83 in each of the instruments 53 enables the plating position of a pile loop to be determined, the edge of the recess engaging the yarn to position it in the needle hook with respect to the body yarn B. Instruments 53 may be provided only for the needles employed in heel and toe knitting, or, alternatively, instruments 53 may be provided all round the upper cylinder. To enable ribbed, plated fabric to be knitted all round the cylinder, for example, in knitting the leg, the instruments 53 may be rendered inoperative, either by raising the instrument-operating cam 71 to inoperative position, or by arranging the pile yarn T to be fed below the instruments. The verge of the upper cylinder is made in two parts, and means are provided for raising one section to permit the instruments 53 to project beyond it to co-operate with the needles in the lower cylinder, while the other section is maintained at the level to co-operate with needles in the upper cylinder to form rib loops. |
