Disclosed is an image forming apparatus having a facsimile or a facsimile function. The present invention is to enable the usage of an external device connected to a line terminal and communications through a line cord connected to an external device terminal by detecting cross connections and exchanging signal lines between the line cord and the external device terminal when the external device and the line cord are interconvertibly connected to the line terminal and the external terminal. The facsimile according to the present invention comprises: a line cord which is disposed to be connected to a line cord and is connected to a first signal line; an external device terminal which is disposed to be connected to an external device and is connected to a second signal line; a switch unit for switching between the first signal line and the second signal line; and a control unit for determining a connection state of the line terminal and a line cord and a connection state of the external device terminal and an external device, and controlling the switch unit to enable the usage of the external device connected to the line terminal and communications through the line cord connected to the external device terminal by switching paths of the first signal line and the second signal line when the line terminal and the external device terminal are interconvertibly connected to the external device and the line cord.
