The present invention relates to a portable terminal and a method for controlling the same. The portable terminal sets remote control operation keys that a user wants when the user registers desired functions of a remote controller of a remote control target in the portable terminal, receives infrared ray codes to be mapped to the set remote control operation keys not from the remote control target but directly from the remote controller of the remote control target, and remotely controls the remote control target using the infrared ray codes received form the remote controller.
