A hydraulic drive system for a vehicle converts energy between hydraulic energy and mechanical energy by storing and releasing hydraulic fluid. The system includes a high pressure storage device, a low pressure storage device, and a pump-motor operating at a range of pump-motor speeds for converting between hydraulic energy and mechanical energy. The pump-motor is disposed between the high pressure device and the low pressure device. The system utilizes various pressure limits for compensating for various inefficiencies, such as those related to temperature changes, to maintain the hydraulic drive system in normal operation.
