A method and an apparatus for uplink power control using a ranging signal in a wireless communication system are provided. The method includes transmitting ranging channel information to a pico Base Station (BS), receiving power control information on a macro terminal from the pico BS, controlling a transmit power strength for the macro terminal based on the power control information, and instructing the macro terminal to control a transmit power to the controlled strength.

1. A method of uplink power control for a terminal in a macro Base Station (BS) of a wireless communication system, the method comprising:
communicating with a communication system node through a backhaul communication unit; transmitting ranging channel information to a pico BS through the backhaul communication unit; receiving power control information on a macro terminal from the pico BS; based on the power control information, determining a transmit power strength for the macro terminal; and instructing the macro terminal to control a transmit power to the determined strength.
