The method involves operating the fuel cell during the galvanic operation for a short time, fully or partially in an electrolysis mode. The fuel cell is temporarily provided with the external power source for electrolysis. The fuel cell is provided with an electrolysis stream of the external power source of maximum 50 milliampere per centimeter square. An independent claim is also included for the fuel cell for executing the method.
