PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tool replacement method in which a stand-by time can be shortened more than before, and a machine tool for machining a workpiece while replacing a tool by the tool replacement method.SOLUTION: A machine tool 1 includes: a main spindle 5 rotatably supported to a spindle head 4; a main spindle rotation drive mechanism 8 for rotating the main spindle 5; a tool magazine 10 disposed laterally of a spindle head 4; a rotating shaft 21 provided at a lower end part of the tool magazine 10; a drive motor 23 for rotating the rotating shaft 21; an angular position detector 24 provided at the drive motor 23; a tool replacement mechanism 20 provided with gripping parts 26 at both end parts and comprising a tool replacement arm 25, etc.; and a control unit 40 for controlling the operation of each section. When the tool replacement arm 25 is rotated to an intermediate position after a tool T mounted to the main spindle 5 is replaced with a tool T' held in a tool pot 11, the rotation of the main spindle 5 is started at the point when the tool T' mounted to the main spindle 5 is brought into non-contact with the gripping part 26. |
