<p>A photopolymerizable compound, containing a CH2 = C< group, is mixed with a minor proportion of an alpha - carbonyl alcohol, R-CO-CHOH-R1 (R and R1 are the same or different and are H or monovalent hydrocarbon radicals), and is polymerized by the action of light. Copolymers or heteropolymers may be formed by carrying out the process in the presence of another unsaturated compound containing a >C = C< group. The polymerization may be carried out by the bulk, emulsion, granular and solution methods, and a peroxide catalyst, e.g. hydrogen peroxide may also be present. Preferred alpha-carbonyl alcohols are the acyloins; but glycollic aldehyde, 3-hydroxy-4 - methyl - pentanone - 2, 12 - hydroxy - 13 - keto - tetracosane, as well as benzoin, acetoin, butyroin, toluoin, tert.-butyl benzoin and o- and p-tert.-butyl toluoin are specified. The photopolymerizable compounds may be vinyl acid vinylidene esters of organic and inorganic acids, e.g. vinyl chloride, acetate, chloroacetate, vinylidene chloride; vinyl ethers, e.g. divinyl ether; vinyl ketones, e.g. methyl vinyl ketone; styrene; dienes, e.g. chloroprene and isoprene; chloroacrylic esters; acrylo- and methacrylonitriles and amides, and alkyl esters of acrylic and methacrylic acids. Diethyl furmarate may be copolymerized with the photopolymerizable compound. Examples are given of the photopolymerization of methyl methacrylate in the presence of benzoin, 3-hydroxy-4-methylpentanone-2, butyroin, tert.-butyl benzoin, toluin, tert.-butyl toluoin, 11-hydroxy-12-ketotetracosane, glycollic aldehyde or acetoin; and of the use of benzoin in the photopolymerization of isopropyl, n-butyl, 2-nitropropyl, and betadimethylaminoethyl methacrylates, vinyl formate, acetate and chloride, asym.-dichlorethylene, styrene, methyl alpha-chloroacrylate, divinyl ether, acrolein, acrylonitrile, methyl vinyl ketone N-methyl methacrylamide and methylene diethylmalonate. Examples are also given of the interpolymerization under the action of light and a small amount of benzoin of vinyl acetate, and (1) a diethylene glycolmaleic anhydride condensation product, or (2) methyl methacrylate; and of a method of filling holes in any material to which the filling material will adhere by the use of a dough containing methyl methacrylate monomer and polymer, lauryl peroxide and benzoin, which is polymerized by ultra-violet light.
