The present invention relates to a method for controlling an AC motor. The method according to the present invention includes the steps of: receiving an ordered torque value; generating an ordered current from the ordered torque value; generating an ordered voltage at CVC current control mode by using the ordered current; if the ordered voltage enters a voltage limit region, generating an ordered voltage at HVMC voltage control mode by switching to the HVMC voltage control mode; and controlling the torque of the AC motor by using the ordered voltage generated at the CVC current control mode or HVMC voltage control mode. Accordingly, the current control method is used at a low speed, while the voltage control method using the entire voltage limit is used at a high speed, thus safely and effectively controlling the AC motor with a high speed.
