The present invention relates to a method for providing control power for an electrical power network, wherein at least one battery connected to the electrical power network, said battery comprising a plurality of battery elements which each comprise a plurality of individual galvanic cells, feeds electrical power to the electrical power network at times as needed and draws electrical power from the electrical power network at times as needed, wherein the battery comprises a peripheral system, by means of which the power is fed into the galvanic cells for storage or drawn from the galvanic cells, wherein at least one battery element receives or provides power when control power is provided, wherein the battery element used to provide the control power or the battery elements used to provide the control power are selected on the basis of the temperature of the galvanic cells of the battery elements and on the state of charge of the battery and/or of the battery elements. The present invention further relates to a device for carrying out the present method.
