[Class 83 (iv)] In a process of flanging as in Specification 347,635, a metal plug 38 or the like is flanged for connection to a plate 33 or for other purposes by means of an operation which involves shearing along the dotted line 39 and pressing the metal to form a flange 40 as shown in Fig. 5. To lock the plug protuberances 61 are formed on the flange 40 by means of apertures 60 in the plate. The plug is mounted on an anvil 34 and is acted on by a die 36, which engages a shoulder 35. A head 45 is attached to a spindle 43 sliding in a bore of the die 36 and a rod is passed into the bore and struck if the die fails to release itself at some such region as 42. The spindle 43 may be of uniform width so as to be capable of being withdrawn. In a modification, particularly for plugs having no shoulder 35 to centre the die 36, the spindle 43 is provided with a tapering point to engage a depression in the plug. Another construction for operating on bushes is provided with a spindle having a reduced end engaging the aperture in the bush. The invention may be applied to the connection together of two plates and the flange may be given any desired shape. |
