[Class 100 (ii)] Rotary machines; late news, means for printing ; stopping, starting, and throw-out arrangements.-A printing-machine, particularly for printing late news, comprises at least two couples acting on the same web and each consisting of a printing cylinder and an impression cylinder, and means whereby, while the machine is running, either couple may be rendered inoperative while the other couple continues to operate. Means are also provided whereby both couples may be operated simultaneously. The web 14 passes from or to the main printing-couples of the press between late-news printing cylinders 11, 10 and their co-operating impression-cylinders 13, 12. Each cylinder 12, 13 is mounted in eccentric bearings 36 formed with toothed segments engaging pinions 39 on a shaft 40 operable by a handlever 41 whereby the cylinders 12, 13 may be independently moved into and out of co-operative relation with the cylinders 10, 11. A shaft 25, driven from the press, is adapted to drive the cylinders 12, 13 either separately or together through differential gears arranged one at each end of the shaft 25, and the cylinders 10, 11 are driven by spur gearing from the cylinders 12, 13. Each differential gear comprises a bevel pinion fast on the shaft 25 meshing witn planet pinions 28 carried by a rotary drum 31 and engaging a bevel pinion 32 loose on the shaft 25 and fast with a spur gear 33 engaging a spur gear 35 on the shaft of the impression cylinder. To transmit drive from the shaft 25 to the gear 35, the drum 31 is held stationary by a brake band 48, the ends of which are secured to a collar 49 fixed to the shaft 40 or connected thereto by a coiled spring. The arrangement is such that movement of the lever 41 to put the cylinder 12 into printing position tightens the band 48 to effect the drive of the cylinder only when in this position. To ensure register of the late news matter with the other printed matter, the drum 31 is arrested in a definite angular position by one arm 62 of a three-armed lever engaging a notch 63 in the drum, a second arm 60 of the lever engaging a cam disc 68 on the shaft 40, and the third arm 65 being connected to a spring 64. The cam 68 moves the arm 62 clear of the notch 63 when the lever 41 is turned to separate the cylinders 10, 12. Multi-colour printing may be effected by printing simultaneously from both cylinders 10, 11. Specifications 17482/14, [Class 100 (ii)], 384,117, and 386,170 are referred to.
