A system for controlling an electrical appliance enables a single unit to be configured for a wide range of harmonic load control channels, protocols and Demand Response Modes, and is also compatible with current harmonic load control channels used by the electricity suppliers. The system includes a processing unit electrically connected to a mains electricity supply, the processing unit including a memory and a processor, the memory including program code instructions configured to cause the processor to: filter the mains electricity supply to extract one or more harmonic load control channels selected from a plurality of harmonic load control channels; and convert the one or more harmonic load control channels to one or more electricity demand response mode signals selected from a plurality of electricity demand response mode signals.
