Disclosed embodiments include hydraulic cylinder assemblies (200; 300) and piston assemblies (205) for use in hydraulic cylinder assemblies. A rod (210; 310) is attached to a piston (200; 300). The rod has first portion, a second portion with a cross-sectional area that is less than a cross-sectional area of the first portion, and a third portion positioned between the first and second portions. The third portion has a cross-sectional area that transitions between the cross-sectional area of the first portion and the cross-sectional area of the second portion. A collar (225; 325) is sized to fit over the rod with an internal feature that engages the third portion of the rod. A fastener (235; 335) holds the piston against the collar and provides a clamp force on the piston.
