A sliding engine component having a sliding surface provided by a plastics polymer-based composite layer (106) on a substrate (102), the composite layer comprising: a matrix of plastics polymer-based material having distributed throughout the matrix: 0.1 to 20 %vol liquid-filled microcapsules (108); and incidental impurities; and, a method of manufacture of such a sliding engine component.
