PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow a focus detection of a phase difference method using an image pickup element having a focus detection pixel on an imaging plane to obtain a focus detection computation result in many focus detection areas by frames fewer than before, and enables a time required for obtaining an in-focus position to be shortened.SOLUTION: A focus detection device performing a focus detection on the basis of pixel data on a subject acquired from image capturing means having pupil division means of a photographing optical system is configured to: set a focus detection area divided into a division area, and a plurality of different first areas for determining a focus state in the focus detection area; compute first correlation data about a subject image in each of the division areas from the pixel data, and holds the computed first correlated data in a memory; add the first correlation data on the division area included in each of the first areas by reading the first correlation data thereon from the memory, and generate second correlation data on each of the first areas; and determine a focus state of the plurality of the first areas in predetermined order on the basis of the second correlation data on each of the first areas. |
