PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem that, in a Q-switch element by a conventional technology, it is required to apply a switching voltage for a high-speed fall time or a rise time at a voltage not lower than several hundreds in order to rotate deflection light at 90°, on the other hand, high-speed switching is possible at a few V in a waveguide type optical Q-switch, however, optical damage occurs in a lithium niobate waveguide which is formed by a titanium diffusion method, and then, in order to avoid the optical damage, an upper limit of operable input optical power is retained at 200 mW at most.SOLUTION: This switch element comprises: an optical waveguide of a channel-type waveguide structure composed of a core and a lower clad; and a Q-switch drive unit having first and second electrodes arranged at an upper face of the core and an upper face of the lower clad, respectively, and applying a voltage between the first and second electrodes so as to be switchable in on/off-states. The switch element is manufactured by joining a core material and a clad material which are different in refraction factor to each other by a direct joining method. |
